2014 is a special year for me. As I count the days to my big “5-0”, I also count my blessings for being a healthy and happy person who lived a privileged life, but most important of all, I am grateful to be surrounded by amazing people like you, who have given me support, love and care and have inspired me to be a better person.
Many of you have asked me what I wanted to do to celebrate this milestone birthday and have so generously offered to help me organise something special. Instead of having a “party”, I have decided to bring love and hope to a group of hill tribe children, who are deprived of the opportunity to receive education because they live too far away from any school. I have enclosed some photos of the children from my last visit to their village.
On my next trip to see the beautiful smiles of these children on 29 May, two days before my birthday, I will hike up the winding trail to the peak of the mountain at 1,000 metres with my less than healthy knees, in a bid to raise funds to pay for 50 months’ salary (US$150 per month) of a teacher who will provide education for 31 children of The Red Lahu community living in Baan Huay Kub Kab, Thailand.
I have come to realise that the best gift in life is to give the gift of hope, opportunity and choices, and with education comes all three. I sincerely hope that you will once again support me to bring this amazing gift to these children and to give them a chance to change their destiny.
You can learn more about this project by visiting “Teacher for the Lahu Hill Tribe Children Project“. Please note that they are in the final stages of updating their website, and you will find more information by the end of February.
